Non-Binary

Non-binary is an umbrella term for people who identify as a gender other than wo/man and/or who are not wo/men exclusively. The term non-binary can also be used as a specific identity term by people who know they are not wo/men, but may be currently unable to find a term that fits their gender experience more precisely. Non-binary people may or may not transition physically, legally, or socially. Categorically, non-binary people are considered under the transgénero umbrella but may or may not identify as transgender specifically. Those decisions are based on their understanding of their relationship with gender and their access to transitioning within their culture.
e.g. Storm wrote non-binary in the gender field at the doctor’s office.
The Non-Binary Flag
A flag with 4 horizontal stripes: top to bottom: yellow, white, purple, and black. The yellow represents being outside the gender binary. The purple represents those who relate to the gender binary. The white and black stripes represent those who are agender and those who are multigender.
