Exclusive Gender / Identity

Exclusive Gender / Identity

(compound noun)

Exclusive genders and identities are those who have some kind of cultural prerequisite necessary in order to fully understand and thus identify as being of that gender or identity. Examples of this are the genders of indigenous tribes that exist outside the gender binary but are necessarily different than other non-binary identities due to the way they have grown alongside cultural practices and situate themselves in a specific way within their cultures. This is why not every non-binary person is able to identify as 2spirit.

e.g. Fa’afafine is an exclusive gender in Samoan culture.
