Normalization
(noun | to normalize, verb, -s, -ed, -ing)
Normalization refers to social processes through which ideas and actions come to be seen as ‘normal‘ and become taken-for-granted or ‘natural’ in everyday life. This can be a good or a bad thing. Normalizing not gendering people you don’t know is good. Normalizing that any gender non-conformity a person might exhibit is unacceptable is a bad thing. Normalization is done in little pieces— the phrases that we use to greet each other, the ways in which we talk about people, the representation that we have in popular media, etc. but it has a huge impact on our cultures and us as individuals. Normalization is one of the ways that internalized transphobia is established in an individual.
e.g. Arlan hoped to normalize the use of gender neutral pronouns at ver office.
