Transition
(verb | to transition, verb, -s, -ed. -ing)
The process by which transgender people affirm their gender identity. This may include social, physical/medical, and/or mental/emotional transition. Specifically this may or may not include and is not limited to: changing one’s name legally or socially, taking hormones, having surgery, changing legal documents to reflect one’s gender, coming out to loved ones, dressing as one chooses, and accepting oneself, among many other things. Transition is an individual process. No two transitions are the same. While there are some typical patterns that a trans person’s transition might follow, those patterns are not necessary to be trans, and following those patterns doesn’t make someone “more” trans than someone else.
e.g. Bill started transitioning at age 32 when he started testosterone and began researching top surgery.
