Someone who dresses as and/or presents themselves as a gender other than the one with which they usually identify. Transvestism may be aesthetic, sexual, a facet of someone’s gender, or have other reasons. Transvestite is the preferred term in the UK, as compared to crossdresser in the USA. This divergence of terms sometimes leads to people using the acronym CD/TV to refer to the community that those terms cover. Categorically, transvestites are considered under the gender non-conforming and trans+ umbrella, but they may or may not identify with those terms or others specifically. Those decisions are based on their understanding of their relationship with gender and their access to transitioning within their culture.

e.g. Edmund went on a “girl’s weekend” with his transvestite friends.
